Syria prepares its internal house for post- peace era
Syria, Politics, 6/5/2000
Political and economic observers in Syria find it very difficult to make separate the accelerated campaign to fight corruption from the current economic developments, especially as during last month ( May) trends of the 9th regional congress of the Baath Party to be held on June 17 have been crystallized.
These observers say what is taking place in Syria is preparation to enter the post peace era. A matter which needs arranging internal conditions in Syria.
With the continued campaign to fight corruption led by Col. Bashar al-Assad for more than two years, observers expect the 9th regional congress to provide the basic frame for fighting corruption and reforms, and therefore it is expected to have the campaign against corruption continue until the congress is convened and after which new arrangements and appointments for posts will start, especially as this congress is responsible for deciding programs, plans and policies that will be embarked on in the coming years.
Meantime, the central command of the National Progressive Front in Syria which includes the coalition parties which rule the country, led by the Baath party met in Damascus on Saturday evening.
The participants in the meeting stressed backing for the economic and administrative reforms measures and the corruption fighting campaign carried out by the government. A Syrian official source said that the leadership considered the taken measures and decisions as " a step on the road of correcting the violations and a consolidation to our internal front and a strengthening for our national unity."
