Clinton, Israelis and the Syrian track
Syria-Israel-USA, Politics, 6/3/2000

The correspondent of the Monte Carlo radio in occupied Jerusalem said that the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak did not hear from the US President any development that justifies the Israeli development towards the possibility of resuming negotiations with Syria.

The correspondent added that Barak had disclosed what he had of respect to Syria, and promised that the solution with Syria will be on the ground of international legitimacy resolutions and Madrid conference.

On the other hand, observers linked Israel's returning back to its preoccupation with the Syrian track to a new attempt to place pressure on the Palestinians in their talks with Israel.

Meantime, the Israeli radio said on Friday in the context of its report that the US President Bill Clinton announced that he is confident that negotiations between Syria and Israel can be resumed within weeks and that Israel's withdrawal from South Lebanon increases the possibility of resuming these negotiations.

For his part, Barak said that there is still a small opening on the Syrian track " which we did not close. And we honor Syria's dignity and sovereignty and see in the UN resolutions 242, and 338 and Madrid terms of reference a basis for the negotiations in the future."

The Israeli minister at the divan of the Israeli prime minister Haem Ramon has underestimated in statements made on Friday the chances of resuming negotiations between Syria and Israel during the few coming months.
