Israel's acceptance in a regional organization, breaks it isolation at the UN
Israel, Politics, 6/2/2000

Washington and the Secretary General of the UN have praised Israel's acceptance as a provisional member at West Europe group and other groups, which is one of the regional groups at the UN. A matter which will at the ultimate end pave the way for electing it as a member at the UN commissions after it has been banned from doing so for more than 40 years.

The USA representative at the UN Richard Holbrooke said that this step will correct the unfairness inflicted on Israel, and considered it as a step perpetuating the principle of equality among member of the UN organization.

Diplomats indicated that the relations between the UN and Israel which have been characterized by caution and hostility are on their way for a change, stressing that the acceptance of Israel on the group of West Europe and other groups following the withdrawal of the Israeli forces from South Lebanon have broken decades of Israel's diplomatic isolation inside the UN.
