Al-Assad received a message from Tunisian counterpart, phone call from Canada's prime minister

Syria's President Hafez al-Assad on Tuesday received a message from President Zein al-Abidin Bin Ali of Tunisia in which he praised President Hafez al-Assad's backing to joint Arab action. He stressed Tunisia's full backing and firm stand in support of both Syria and Lebanon to restore their occupied territories.

Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara was handed the message during his meeting on Tuesday with the Tunisian minister of Labor and social affairs al-Chadli al-Najati.

The meeting was attended by the deputy foreign minister Suleiman Haddad and the Tunisian ambassador in Damascus.

The President also received on Tuesday evening a telephone call from the Prime Minister of Canada Jean Cretienne.

The two leaders discussed during the telephone conversation the developments in the Middle East region.

Meantime and in another development,, the Syrian exhibition " Syria, the land of civilizations" was opened on Tuesday evening in Quebec, Canada.

The exhibition was opened under the patronage of President Hafez al-Assad, the Canadian Prime Minister Cretienne and the prime minister of Quebec province Lucienne Buchare.

President al-Assad was presented to the exhibition's opening ceremony by the minister of culture and national guidance Maha Qanout.

In a speech she delivered there the minister conveyed President al-Assad's greetings together of the Syrian people to the Canadian friends and the Syrian and Arab communities in Canada. She highlighted the relations of friendship and cooperation between the two nations and countries. She added that relations between Syria and Canada have been greatly enhanced following the recent visit made by Cretienne to Syria.
