Press union welcomes royal amnesty to banned journalists

The Moroccan Press Union (SNPM) welcomed "with great satisfaction" the Royal amnesty to two Moroccan banned journalists, canceling a court prison sentence and ban from journalism activities.

In a statement, the SNPM congratulates Khalid Mechbal and Mustapha Alaoui and notes that the royal amnesty "truly meets the stance expressed toward the sentence by different Moroccan associations and media circles, including the Union."

The SNPM renews its call for urgent amendments to the press code, securing all needed guarantees to make of it a law that protects and organizes the press freedom in keeping with the rule of law requirements.

Several Moroccan papers dwelt on the meaning of the king's amnesty as a gesture consecrating irreversibly freedoms and Morocco's choice for these principles that are features of a new era breaking with constraints imposed on the freedom of expression. For "Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb," the royal amnesty is also a strong message of ethics to media professionals more than ever facing challenges of lucidity and responsibility.
