El Mundo highlights Mubarak's visit to Spain
Egypt-Spain, Politics, 5/29/2000
El Mundo, Spain's second widely circulated newspaper, highlighted in its yesterday's issue Mubarak's visit to Spain.
According to the newspaper, the recent developments in the Middle East peace process, bilateral relations and means of fostering political and economic ties will figure high during Mubarak's talks in Spain.
The newspaper noted that Spain is the first European Union member state Mubarak visits following his talks with US President Bill Clinton last March.
"Mubarak's role in the Middle East peace process is not confined to the Palestinian-Israeli track," wrote the newspaper, terming the efforts Egypt exerts on both the Syrian and Lebanese tracks as "pivotal".
The newspaper described Mubarak as the "key negotiator" on the Palestinian-Israeli track, adding that Egypt hosted the signing of three agreements between the Palestinians and Israelis prior to reaching the final-status agreement.
The newspaper described the talks Mubarak will hold with King Juan Carlos of Spain and Prime Minister Maria Aznar as "important", referring to the speech the President will deliver before the Spanish Parliament.
El Mundo confirmed Spain's desire to recapture the spirit of peace in the Middle East. The newspaper also voiced Spain's keenness on becoming actively involved in rekindling the peace process in the region.
