UN puts border landmarks in south Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 5/26/2000
The spokesman for the UN Frid Echard said on Wednesday that the UN will immediately put landmarks for the Lebanese- Israeli borders to make sure that the Israeli withdrawal from South Lebanon is complete.
AFP quoted Echard as saying that UN maps experts, accompanied by the UN secretary general special delegate Terry Larsen will fly over the border after having permission for flying from Lebanon and Syria in a helicopter at a low altitude over the borders in the areas which were not demarcated clearly and will placed colored barrels filled with cement to define the borders, SANA reported.
Meantime, the speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri stressed that Lebanon considers that the implementation of UN resolution 425 is still incomplete because the Israeli occupation forces had not withdrawn from Shebaa farms.
During his meeting on Thursday with Larsen, Berri expressed Lebanon's desire and readiness to cooperate with the UN. Berri also asked Larsen to convey the esteem appreciation of the people of South Lebanon for the role played by the UN in the past and due to be in the future.
Berri criticized what was stated in the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Shebaa farms, noting that there are numerous amendments took place after the year 1974 on these farms, not as mentioned in the report of the UN chief Kofi Annan.
