Egyptian, Moroccan final statement highlights Palestinian, Syrian rights

Egypt and Morocco Wednesday underlined their full support to the Palestinians' rights, including their right to declare an independent state, with Jerusalem as its capital.

In a joint statement, issued at the end of the joint Egyptian-Moroccan High Committee's Fourth Session, cochaired by President Mubarak and King Mohammad VI of Morocco, the two states reiterated their rejection of Israel's settlement policies in the o occupied lands as well as its attempts to Judaize Jerusalem (al-Quds).

The statement added that such policies do not serve the peace for which all the peoples of the region aspire.

Egypt and Morocco also highlighted Syria's rights to restore the occupied Golan Heights, voicing deep worry and concern over Israel's recurrent aggressions against peaceable civilians, infrastructures and economic installations in South Lebanon.

The joint Egyptian-Moroccan Communiqué expressed the two states¹ renunciation of the continued Israeli aggressions launched against Lebanese territories though it expressed its intention to withdraw its forces from all the occupied Lebanese lands.

Egypt and Morocco stressed their solidarity with Lebanon, calling on the international community to interfere to guarantee that such attacks would not recur in the future. The two states reiterated the importance to implement the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions 425 and 426.

On the Iraqi issue, President Mubarak and his guest King Mohammed VI expressed their concern over the difficult conditions through which the Iraqi people are passing.

On the Sudanese issue, the two states voiced their support of the integrity of the Sudanese territories and current efforts to bring about national reconciliation in Sudan with emphasis on the Egyptian-Libyan initiative.

The two leaders asserted the necessity for sustaining such efforts as aimed at unifying the Arab rank and clearing the Arab atmospheres.

"The Egyptian-Moroccan cooperation relations in the economic field were given a great attention during the high committee proceedings, seeking means to enhance them in a way that serves the interests of both countries," the joint communiqué said.

They perused ways to widen the list of customs- and tax-free commodities which have the same effect and are annexed to the agreement on free trade exchange between the two countries, with the aim of increasing the bulk of trade between them, according to the communique a protocol was signed in this regard.

The communiqué stressed the importance of the role the private sectors in the two countries are playing to develop trade cooperation through making use of available opportunities in the two nations in order to consolidate and invigorate commercial exchange.

The two leaders gave their directives to the remaining economic, cultural, and technological sectors to continue working to deepen cooperation between the two countries, which has already gone through significant stages in all fields.

According to the joint communiqué, the talks the two leaders held reflected an identity of views on the Arab, Islamic, regional and international issues of common interest.

"The two leaders reviewed the Middle East peace process and stressed their adherence to the peaceful settlement in accordance with the international legitimacy resolutions, especially UN Security Council Resolutions 242, 338 and 425, the land-for-peace principle ratified by the Madrid Conference and the commitments and pledges reached by the concerned parties," the communiqué said.
