Mediation between al-Bashir and al-Turabi
Sudan, Politics, 5/25/2000

The Sudanese dailies said on Wednesday that a delegation representing Islamic figures, is currently making mediation between the Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir and his rival Hassan al-Turabi.

The Sudanese dailies quoted Sudanese governmental officials as saying that the delegation which is led by the Egyptian Sheikh who lives in Qatar Youssef al-Qardawi and includes the Yemeni Sheikh Abdul Maguid al-Zandani and the leader of the Jordanian labor front party Abdul Latif Arabeyat had arrived in Sudan, and moves of this delegation are being made in secret.

However, the Sudanese "al-Sahafi al-Dawli" stressed that the delegation met with the first deputy for the Sudanese President Ali Othman Muhammad Taha.

Sudan, however, is witnessing a political crisis since December 12, 1999 when President al-Bashir announced the state of emergency, dissolved the national council and quitted its speaker Hassan al-Turabi.
