On Israel's withdrawal from South Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 5/25/2000

In its Wednesday's commentary written by Mahmoud Awad from Cairo, the Monte Carlo radio said on Wednesday that Israel quits South Lebanon because of three elements: a serious Lebanese resistance; a genuine Lebanese unity for the first time and a continued Syrian backing for this unity.

Awad added that Israel's pullback from South Lebanon means the creation of a new condition that can be described as "more than a truce, but less than a settlement," which means that Israel limits its losses from one side in order to increase its power on the other side.

He added the statements launched by Israel warns of a hot Summer, especially when Israel strikes positions near the Syrian borders and statements made by its officials that by striking these positions which are close to the Syrian borders, they send a message to Syria, adding that the second message is that the Israeli officials do not rule out continued Israeli operations in South Lebanon in case Hizbullah would have control on the sectors evacuated by Israel, which means that Israel even after the withdrawal reserves itself the right to have the veto on the internal Lebanese condition and the second message is that as from now Israel will make Syria the one who will pay the price for Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon. So as the next Israeli game is under the title of " isolating Syria," Awad said.
