100 mummies found in Bahareya oasis ruler's tomb
Egypt, Culture, 5/23/2000
"The tomb of the ancient Bahareya oasis ruler of the 25th Dynasty has been unearthed along with 100 mummies," said Culture Minister Faroak Hosni, who is also head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA).
Zahi Hawas, Chief of of Giza Antiquities Department, said the new finds match the historical and artistic importance of the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt.
SCA Secretary-General Gaballah Ali Gaballah said the Egyptian team found the tomb beneath a number of houses built early in the 20th century at the Bawaiti area, aka Sheikh Soot.
According to Hawas, the mummies were found after digging inside seven new tombs in the Bahareya Oasis Valley of the Mummies.
"So far 205 mummies in the area have been carefully dug up," he concluded.
