Something special is taking place between Morocco and Senegal, Wade says
Morocco-Senegal, Politics, 5/23/2000

Relations between Morocco and Senegal are time- immemorial and something really special is currently taking place between the two countries and between H.M king Mohammed VI and myself, said President Abdoulay Wade of Senegal.

President Wade, who is currently on a visit to France, told the Paris-based weekly Jeune Afrique-L'Intelligent, that relations between Morocco and Senegal date back to the dawn of time and that "Morocco is not only a great African country, from the political, spiritual and military standpoint, but it also holds a strategic position between Europe and the rest of our continent."

Abdoulay Wade who was elected President of Senegal two months ago is expected on a visit to Morocco this May 29 at the invitation of King Mohammed VI.

He stated further in his interview with the weekly that "of all African sub-Saharan countries, Senegal is undoubtedly the state that has the oldest relations with Morocco." "Mohammed V was deeply attached to our country and so was his son, Hassan II. But Mohammed VI is, without doubt, the most African of the three," he said.

President Wade recalled that King Mohammed VI had dispatched his brother (Prince Moulay Rachid) to the swearing-in ceremony and had sent him a very warm message.

In the message of congratulations to Abdoulay Wade following his election as President of Senegal, the sovereign had renewed determination to spare no effort to consolidate bilateral cooperation and hailed "the spirit of sincere brotherhood that has for time immemorial bound the Moroccan and Senegalese peoples" and that "derives its strength from the shared religious and cultural values."

President wade added that he has not visited Morocco for some thirty years and that he was looking forward to going to this beautiful country.

In his interview, president wade announced that he was also planning to visit Libya and probably Algeria.
