On internal developments in Syria
Syria, Politics, 5/23/2000

The lecturer at Damascus university faculty of letters Imad Fawzi al-Shueibi wrote an article in the Lebanese daily al-Mustaqbal on Monday in which he dealt with what is taking place in Syria and what is needed to withstand corruption.

Al-Shueibi stated recent developments in Syria provoke a question debated by the Arab public and the mass media on that why the state in Syria has woke up after 13 years on mistakes which have been committed and practiced daily in Syria.

He explained politics are but complex calculations sayig " We do not here justify the delay in asking why, but to explain the nature of the Syrian attitude in dealing with issues, besides an issue which should be taken into account, namely the regional and international changes which have been besieging and cordoning Syria."

Al-Shueibi added certain persons quoted al-Assad saying that President Hafez al-Assad told the former prime minister ( Mahmoud al-Zou'bi ) that this is the worst government in Syria's history and that what is being said on the street is the least to be said about this government, noting that " the President was almost about to get into the street leading people against the malfunction of this government."

Al-Shueibi continued " It is true that the rolling snow-ball should take down with it what ever sticks to it, however, the Syrian snow-ball should roll down to announce the beginning of the new transformation and the new correction."

He explained correction started at the hands of President Hafez al-Assad ( in 1970 when he ruled Syria) and the second correction is being made today under his care and backing. A correction which is needed to protect the state's achievements at the present times.

He continued " to understand actually what is taking place in Syria, we have to realize things in its proper prespective. What is required is not to have the state an embodiment to people's total inclination who want things to be changed by at the press of a button or (for) a dramatic decision."
