Visit of the Jordanian King to Syria hints of hope on peace talks
Syria-Jordan, Politics, 5/23/2000
The Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas said on Monday quoting a diplomatic source in Damascus as saying that the Jordanian King Abdullah II would not have come to Damascus at this time unless he had in his hand something to discuss with President Hafez al-Assad. A thing which might constitute the ground for finding out the formula to resuming negotiations on the Syrian track with Israel, especially as all sides have fears of the possibility that the situation in the region will be turned into a very explosive one if the two coming months period of time will be not seized to attain a progress concerning the peace process.
The sources indicated no news leaked about what the Jordanian King had carried to Damascus but these sources speak of a solution that guarantees the Syrian sovereignty over the coasts of the eastern and northern coasts of Tiberies lake while UN forces are to maintain supervision that ensures the security of the waters and its flow to Israel.
