5 nuclear countries agree to unconditionally get rid of nuclear arsenal
Regional, Politics, 5/20/2000
Five countries owning nuclear weapons agreed to get rid of their nuclear arsenals without any preconditions, a matter that was met with unanimous hailing of non nuclear weapons countries.
However, the agreement reached few hours before the conclusion of NPT Review Conference, so it did not set a timetable for the nuclear weapons dismantling since five nuclear-weapons countries are concerned.
Noteworthy is the fact that the latest move is a culmination of enormous efforts exerted by the "new agenda coalition" countries namely, Egypt, Mexico, Ireland, south Africa, Sweden, Newzealand, Brazil.
These countries had earlier exercised pressures to this end. Experts believe that what could impede the comprehensive dismantling of nuclear weapons, however, is fears that Israel, India and Pakistan may retain their possession of nuclear weapons.
