Egypt, Politics, 5/20/2000
Egyptian President Mubarak will receive a report from Foreign Minister Amr Moussa on the outcome of the Summit and the contacts he held on the sidelines of the summit with the Sudanese Foreign Minister and Heads of the Ethiopian and Eritrean delegations.
In statements on arrival, Moussa said he has been entrusted with the greetings of President Cassam Uteem to President Mubarak and will deliver a message from Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam to Mubarak.
Moussa stopped over at Dar es-Salam where he held talks with Tanzanian Foreign Minister Jakaya Kikwter on promoting bilateral relations, African issues and meetings of the COMESA Summit, which kicked off on Wednesday and concluded sessions on Friday.
The fifth three-day COMESA Summit closed on Friday with the summiteers reiterating agreement over making their customs tariffs equal zero sum on October 31,2000.
They called on member-states to publish their gazettes on a Free Trade Area from that date.
In their final communique, the heads of state and governments urged all member-states to declare the COMESA Free Trade Zone in their next national fiscal budgets to be presented to their national parliaments.
The COMESA Leaders also mandated the Bureau of Council to initiate a dialogue in consultation with both states on the technical issues affecting their trade relations with the rest of the COMESA Member-Sates.
The COMESA Leaders included a special clause on Egypt. They hailed Cairo for organizing and hosting the first COMESA Regional Economic Conference and urged member-states to participate effectively in the coming economic conference.
