Ghaddafi urges the West to abandon the colonizational mentality in Africa
Libya, Politics, 5/20/2000
Libyan leader Moammar El-Ghaddafi newly stated that the West must abandon colonization methods in dealing with Africa.
In an interview to the Italian newspaper La Stampa and viewed on Libyan television, Ghaddafi accused what he depicted as the imperialism and Zionism of the attempts made to corrupt the atmosphere between Africa and Europe after their historical meeting at the Cairo summit this April, saying that he expected after this historic meeting that enemies of cooperation would interfere to corrupt the atmosphere between Europe and Africa.
Ghaddafi urged on the necessity of differentiating among the Barcelona declaration process of the European - Mediterranean cooperation and European - African cooperation.
The European-Mediterranean Partnership was launched in Barcelona, Spain in 1995 with the aim of fostering political, economic and cultural ties between the 15 EU member states and 12 southern and eastern Mediterranean countries. The Barcelona conference aimed to establish a Euro-Mediterranean free-trade area by the year 2010.
He said European - Mediterranean cooperation includes parts of the Asian continent among which are problems like the Palestinians and the Israelis while the European - African cooperation which focuses on cooperation with African countries.
Concerning the Lockerbie trial taking place under a Scotch court in Holland and the procedures taken, he said this issue "is up to the court (to decide)."
In answering a question concerning accusations used in defense of the Libyan suspects against the Palestinians, where they had been accused of having been involved in this affair, Ghaddafi said "when it was a political matter, we defended the Palestinian's and the Syrian and we cleared them of this charge, yet the political page in the case is over and the legal one started in which the defense and prosecution are free in making their case."
