Arab investment conference opened in Beirut

The 5th conference on investment and the Arab capital markets was opened in Beirut on Thursday. It is attended by Arab economic establishments.

The conference lasts for 2 days in which 500 economic expertees form the Arab area, Europe, Canada and U.S.A - are participating. The conference is to discuss a set of the Arab finance causes and means of developing the Arab finance markets as well as the learn from the Asian crisis.

It was also attended by the Lebanese Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss, the Syrian deputy premier for economic affairs Khaled Raad, the Egyptian prime minister Atif Obeid, a representative for the Algerian government and the secretary general of the Syrian- Lebanese higher council as well as a number of economists and Arab and foreign diplomats accredited to Lebanon.

In a speech he made the Lebanese prime minister said that Lebanon is proceeding in strong steps to eliminate economic hardships and to get into a new phase of sustainable development enhanced by social, economic and political stability. He stressed that Lebanon is determinant to start, together with other Arab states, taking part in building in the new world economy.

Earlier in the day, the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud received the Syrian deputy premier for economic affairs Khaled Raad. Current efforts to strengthen economic relations between the two states were reviewed. A similar meeting was also held on Thursday between al-Hoss and Raad.
