A new crime of honor in Jordan
Jordan, Culture, 5/19/2000

The killer is a 30- year old. It was enough for him to " doubt his sister's behavior," who is married and a mother of five to kill her on Wednesday in a new crime of honor," according to the Jordanian daily Jordan Times.

The killer opened fire on his sister ( 27) while walking near a mosque in East Amman and she was killed immediately and the killer did not move from the site of the crime but waited until the police came and arrested him.

During the investigations, he admitted he killed his sister because of rumors over he moral conduct, according to the same paper. However, two married women were killed by the end of April in Jordan in two separate crimes linked to honor.

By Wednesday's crime of honor, number of women who were killed in incidents relating to honor increased to eight since the beginning of this year.

Official statistics say that 20 women are killed annually as an average in the country of honor crimes, which is among the highest in the world regarding the populations of Jordan which exceeds 5 million inhabitants.

Last year the Jordanian Parliament refused a draft bill proposed by the government states to abrogate article 340 of the penalty law which avails those who commit crimes of honor to have alleviated imprisonment sentences instead of being subjected to ordinary killing crimes where death penalty is applied.

Leaderships of a national campaign against crimes of honor stressed that these alleviated sentences encourage such crimes to take place.
