Al-Shara discusses with Moratinos ME peace challenges

The foreign minister Farouk al-Shara on Thursday received the European Union's special envoy for the Middle East Miguel Moratinos.
Present at the meeting was the Deputy Foreign Minister Mrs. Seba Nasser.
Talks dealt with the ME peace process which is facing heavy challenges on all fronts, the role played by the EU in reviving it and achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
Discussions also dealt with the proposed Israeli withdrawal from South Lebanon.
In this regard, foreign minister al-Shara, stressed the need of Israel's implementation of UN resolution 425 unconditionally so as to ensure the withdrawal of the Israeli forces form the Lebanese territories including Shebaa farms.
Talks also dealt with the European- Mediterranean ministerial meeting due to be held in Lisbon on May 25 and 26 and Syrian- European relations.
Stress was laid on the need of developing these relations in all fields.
Moratinos stressed that chances for achieving peace in the region are still available, noting " we are working to resume negotiations on the Syrian track.
Moratinos said that al-Shara asserted to him Syria's commitment to the peace process and the realization of a just and comprehensive peace as a strategic option.
He continued he had discussed with al-Shara, the situation in the region, the ME peace process and the proposed Israeli withdrawal from South Lebanon. He indicated that the ME region is in a critical phase and that withdrawal from south Lebanon has to be made according to an agreement among the sides concerned.
Al-Shara added that he confirmed to al-Shara's the great interest of the EU to achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
