Morocco-USA, Politics, 5/18/2000

Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa, conferred in Washington on Wednesday with US secretary of state, Madeleine Albright.

Talks focused on issues of common concern, mainly the situation in the Maghreb, the evolution of the Middle-East peace process, diplomatic sources in the US federal capital said.

Albright and Benaissa also studied the developments in Africa and the role Morocco can play in the promotion of security, stability and development in the continent, the sources said.

The Moroccan official conferred earlier with US presidential advisor for the Middle-East, Bruce Riedle and the advisor of the US vice-president for security affairs, Leon Fuerth. He is also scheduled to meet other top US officials, leaders of the congress and influential members of the democrat and republican parties at the senate and at the house of representatives, MAP reported.
