New Delhi to Host Afro-Asian Games Next Year
5/18/2000
NEW DELHI, May 18 (MAP)- New Delhi will host the first ever Afro-Asian Games in November 2001, it was officially announced here Wednesday.
As many as 96 countries are expected to participate in the Games which will have competitions in six disciplines -athletics, boxing, football, shooting, swimming and tennis, the Press Trust of India reported, quoting an official spokesperson.
This is the first major multi-sport event to be held in India after the 1982 Asian Games.
After the successful hosting of the 1982 Asiad, India was the country which mooted the concept of Afro-Asian Games and offered to host the inaugural edition. It took nearly two decades for the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) to turn the concept into reality.
The decision to host the Games was approved by the Indian Cabinet Tuesday evening, the spokesperson said.
The Games would help promote cooperation in the two continents, she added. (MAP)AO/
