Kuwaiti parliament approves a proposal giving nationality to 8000 foreigners

The Kuwaiti national council ( the Parliament) approved on Tuesday the amendment of a law that opens the way for some 8,000 of those who do not have a defined nationality ( al-Badoun) to have the Kuwaiti nationality, and those people will be given the nationality if the Kuwaiti ministry of the Interior finds that they apt to necessary stipulations.

The approval came at the majority of 44 parliamentarians against 6 on this amendment which was proposed by the government.

The minister of the Interior is authorized to give the Kuwaiti nationality to every one who can prove he was stated in the population statistics in Kuwait in 1965. Besides family of a person from ( al-Badoun) who is still registered in the list of prisoners and missing arrested by Iraq during its occupation of Kuwait.

According to the new law the minister of the Interior gives 2000 of al-Badoun who meet the conditions of having the Kuwaiti citizenship, as a maximum number for this year. Their children and grandchildren whose number estimated at 6,000 also get the citizenship upon their parents can have it.

The new amended law was approved following a debate that lasted for five hours, over which the parliament members held different views. Some of them were with the idea that the amendment does not include all al-Badoun who are eligible to have the Kuwaiti nationality, while others had reservations on it as they considered that many of those al-Badoun gave false information about their true origin, besides they are not socially categorized as affiliated to the Kuwaiti environment.
