Syrian Party's Regional leadership meets today

The regional leadership of the ruling Baath Party in Syria today will hold a meeting in the presence of most of its members.

The participants in the meeting will discuss results of the preliminary elections to the 9th regional conference which will be held on June 17 and to become acquainted with results of investigations made after " the expulsion" of former prime minister Mahmoud al-Zou'bi from the Baath party on Wednesday.

Well-informed sources in Damascus told the London-based al-Hayat daily that "the judiciary has taken its due course to fighting corruption and it started with top levels and has the authority to target all included in the investigations."

On May 13, the Syrian Finance Minister Muhammad Khaled al-Maheyni released a decision to reserve transferred and non- transferred credits and sums owned by engineer al-Zou'bi ( 62) " in guaranteeing the right of the state."

The text of the decision reads that the reservation targets his wife Nawal al-Droubi and his two sons Muflih ( 28) and Humam ( 25) and his daughter Inas.

On Saturday ( coming Saturday) Baath party branches will be held for three days. It will result in electing most of the " Baathists ' to the Baath party general conference, which will be attended by 950 ( active members in the party).

Among those who won in the Baath party groups elections which were held recently several ministers including the Information Minister Muhammad Omran who is considered one of the first active Party members since the year 1949.

After Omran had frozen his membership at the Baath party in 1967 because he opposed " the Baath Party exaggeration in its inclination to socialism," he renewed his activity in the " Baath party," after the launching of the " Correctionist Movement" led by President Hafez al-Assad in 1970.

It is expected, however the conferees to elect member of the central command, a new Baath party regional leadership and a anew Baath party audition and inspection committee and the new leadership to include " new bloods," foremost being col. Bashar al-Assad.
