Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 5/17/2000
The Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara on Tuesday received a telephone call from the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on the proposed Israeli withdrawal from South Lebanon and the role of the UN in realizing the full implementation of UN security council resolution 425.
In this regard, al-Shara asserted Syria's stand in supporting the role and facilitating its missions to achieve complete Israeli withdrawal.
The Syrian foreign minister also stressed Syria's backing for the Lebanese just demands for restoring back all occupied Lebanese territories including Shebaa farms.
Al-Shara also asserted that in line with international law principles and UN resolutions concerning the Arab- Israeli conflict, Shebaa farms are occupied territories and they are owned by Lebanon.
Al-Shara made it clear that the question of territories has not been a subject of conflict or dispute between Syria and Lebanon.
The foreign minister on the other hand, on Tuesday spoke on the telephone with the Lebanese Premier and foreign minister Salim al-Hoss and talks dealt with developments in the region.
Al-Shara briefed al-Hoss on the telephone call he had made with the UN chief, in which al-Shara confirmed Syria's stand in supporting the UN role and in facilitating its task in achieving the full Israeli withdrawal and Lebanon's just demand to restore all the occupied Lebanese lands, including Shebaa farms.
For his part, al-Hoss briefed al-Shara on contacts Lebanon is making to gather support to its right in Shebaa farms before the UN Security Council meeting due to be held very soon to discuss this issue.
