COMESA Summit reviews preparations for free trade zone
Egypt, Economics, 5/16/2000
Foreign Minister Amr Moussa will leave Cairo on Tuesday for Mauritius to lead Egypt's delegation to the fifth Summit of the Economic Forum of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), due to start on Wednesday and last for three days.
Moussa said the Summit would be the last one to be held before the COMESA Extraordinary Summit to be hosted by Zambia in October.
During the Lusaka Summit, COMESA will announce the establishment of a free-trade zone among its member states.
"Mauritius's Summit Conference will review the reports of COMESA`s Finance Ministers pertaining to preparations for the free-trade zone to be proclaimed on October 31," Moussa added.
"COMESA's presidency will be transferred to Mauritius and later to Egypt," Moussa said.
The COMESA Summit will review a report on the impact of economic situation on efforts aimed at regional integration as well as Africa's share of international investments.
The report will dwell on COMESA's relations with some international organizations, notably the World Trade Organization (WTO).
It will also take up negotiations between the European Union (EU) and African countries, Caribbean and Pacific Ocean with regard to a regional partnership agreement, which gives COMESA's exports access to the European Markets.
The agenda of the Conference will also consider a report from the head of COMESA Ministerial Council on setting up the free trade zone.
