Ethiopia is advancing against Eritrean forces
Ethiopia-Eritrea, Politics, 5/16/2000

The Organization of African Unity (OAU) has expressed concern over the resumption of military confrontation between Ethiopia and Eritrea and regret over the fighting between the two countries despite the intensive efforts exerted by the OAU in order to reach a permanent and peaceful solution to the conflict between the two countries.

The organization addressed an urgent appeal to the governments of both Ethiopia and Eritrea to immediately halt the fighting in order to avoid peoples of the two countries sufferings and destruction and to permit continued peace efforts for the sake of a peaceful settlement to the conflict.

The OAU current presidency also addressed another appeal to the UN to unite the voice and efforts to those of African for the immediate halt of armed confrontation between Ethiopia and Eritrea in order to enable the OAU continuing its work aiming at implementing the framework agreement and its arrangements agreed by the two countries.

Eritrea said today that the fighting is continuing, and acknowledged that its statement yesterday contained an error saying "a plane (wrongly identified as a SU-27) was shot down and its pilot," adding that a second SU-25 also crashed.

Meantime, an official source in the Ethiopian foreign ministry said that "the Ethiopian army proved its supremacy and is enhancing his military existence in west Eritrea." This came following an Ethiopian attack that lasted two days and the withdrawal of the Eritrean forces from the border area. The Ethiopians confirm their victory in the last battles despite of the loss of a chopper in the fight.

The Ethiopians confirmed their complete domination over the borders areas, saying that they "pushed the Eritreans away from the border areas and that the fight in the western area is getting closer now to Bortonto which is of strategic importance."
