Annan meets with Syria's representative at the UN over Shabaa farms
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 5/16/2000
The London-based al-Hayat daily published on Monday quoted well-informed sources saying that the UN chief Kofi Annan on Saturday summoned the Syrian ambassador at the UN and inquired him, in the presence of the UN chief delegate Terry Larsen, over Syria's position concerning the Lebanese Shabaa farms.
The meeting came after Larsen told the UN chief after his coming back from his tour on the Middle East that Syria's position to this effect ( Shabaa farms) is still vague.
The sources said that the Syrian stand towards these farms will be stated when the UN chief report to the UN Security Council will take into account these farms.
The paper quoted well-informed Syrian forces as saying that there is no conflict between Damascus and Beirut over the ownership of Shabaa farms and that the Lebanese position in this regard is backed by Syria.
The sources said that the Syrian foreign ministry handed over the Lebanese foreign ministry documents proving Lebanon's ownership of these farms, noting what is taking place is a redeployment, not a complete withdrawal.
