Beirut workshop on promoting good governance in the Arab states

A seminar on "good governance" will be held in Beirut on May 16-17 with participation of parliamentarians from Arab states and delegates of the inter-parliamentary union and the Arab inter-parliamentary union.

Initiated by the UN development program, the meeting will examine work documents drafted by experts on institutional, legal and organizational procedures, exercise of legislative powers and control of Arab parliaments.

Official news agencies said participants such as the Moroccan delegation led by vice-speaker of the chamber of representatives (lower house), Brahim Rachidi will also probe means to promote cooperation between Arab parliaments.

A delegation from the Majlis al Shura left Oman today for Lebanon, to take part in the Arab parliamentary Conference, due to be held in Beirut, during May 16th to 18th, in response to an invitation from the Lebanese Representatives Council. The delegation comprises Mohammed bin Hamoud al Wahibi and Talal bin Ali al Amry, members of the Majlis.

Yemen is going to participate in the Arab Parliaments Conference to be held in Lebanon during the period of (16-18) the current May. Chairman of the legal and constitutional affairs committee in the Parliament and head of the Yemeni delegation, Ali Abdullah Abu Huliga told SABA that a number of issues concerning Arab Parliaments work and restoring Islamic solidarity as well as means of enhancing cooperation between Arab Parliaments.

The corruption, cronyism, poor management and lack of merit based assignments and promotion to official and managerial positions and a lack of effective parliaments that are active in oversight functions are beginning to be addressed by some Arab states as these problems have extracted a very heavy price on economic and social progress.
