Sudanese defense minister: military always adheres to political leadership
Sudan, Politics, 5/15/2000
Sudanese Defense Minister Abd El-Rahman Ser El-Khatim said that head of the parliament Hasan El-Turabi's discharge by the Sudanese President has no influence inside the Sudanese army and that the Sudanese army is in complete backing to president Bashir's resolutions concerning discharging Torabi.
He added that this stance continues toward the last resolutions that were issued on 6th of last May, depicting the armed forces of being disciplined and not subject to division.
Concerning not arresting El-Turabi, the defense minister said "this a political matter which the armed forces have nothing to do with" and that "no clash will take place among the public defense forces because the civil and the military forces back up the president's decision."
He negated mediation among the Arab states regarding the president and Turabi saying that the current status does not allow mediations and that things are quiet now in Sudan and the decisions made have been accepted.
