Syria, Politics, 5/13/2000

The BBC correspondent in Damascus on Friday said that the recent Syrian government measures, which resulted in expelling former Prime Minister Mahmoud al-Zou'bi and several other officials will also target other ministers and several dignitaries.

The correspondent added that the current Syrian minister of culture Maha Qanout has scored great failure in getting votes enabling her to move to the second phase towards the regional conference of the Baath Party. Also failed for the same position was the chairman of the central commission for audition and inspection Ahmad Yunis, while other names emerged which registered increasing votes. These include the Minister of Information Adnan Omra, the Industry Minister Ahmad al-Homou and the Supply Minister Osama Maa' al-Barid, while no one of the latter's minister's deputies and directors of departments, who are Baathists, succeeded in these elections.

Also won great votes were the Director General of SANA Fayez Sayyegh and the chairman of the Journalists Union Saber Falhout while the director general of the radio and TV station Adel Yazdji failed to receive minimum votes.

Worthy mentioning that these elections pave the way for the Baath branches conferences to elect their representatives to the 9th regional congress of the ruling Baath Party which will be held on June 17 and will last for five days, during which a new Baath Party regional leadership will be elected that might carry several surprises in the names.
