Iraq calls on world countries to resume cooperation
Iraq, Politics, 5/12/2000
Iraq on Wednesday called on all world countries to resume cooperation with it in economic and trade areas and not to continue bearing the results of the sanctions imposed on this country.
The Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz has called before the participants at the international conference against the embargo imposed on Monday in Baghdad the countries concerned to implement item 50 of the UN charter which permits trade exchange with Iraq.
Aziz explained that the issue of making use of item 50 does not contradict with UN Security Council resolutions. And has no links to UN resolution 1284 and that its implementation does not violate nor contradict the international legitimacy, calling on these countries also to resume air flights to Iraq.
Aziz added that there are no texts in the resolutions of the UN Security Council preventing the transport of civilian aircraft to Baghdad and vise-versa, indicating to the statement released by the French foreign ministry on April 4 in which it stressed that the air sanction imposed on Iraq is not legal.
Aziz concluded by saying that any government that decides to resume aviation to Iraq would not be accused of violating UN Security Council resolutions, noting that such an act of resuming air flights will be of great benefits for the establishments doing it.
