Kuwait asks Iran 's mediation over border disputes
Kuwait-Iran, Economics, 5/12/2000
Kuwait has asked for the mediation of countries to settle a dispute with Iran pertaining to a gas field the countries call for having control on.
A source at the oil industry in Kuwait said that the Kuwaiti authorities " asked the help of other countries who enjoy good relations with Iran to settle this problem," but the source gave no mention of the names of countries which were asked for making " good offices " to this end.
The Kuwaiti minister of oil Sheikh Saud Nasser al-Sabah last week held a short visit to Saudi Arabia during which he handed over a message to the Saudi officials.
Worthy mentioning, Iran has been, at least since two months carrying out excavation works at the gas field of al-Derra in the sea "in that part owned by Kuwait, situated in the triangle jointly owned by Saudi Arabia, Iran and Kuwait," according to that source, which explained that this situation will " damage bilateral relations if it continues, and we are in need of this gas since a very long time, but policy ( political developments in the area), prevented us from investing it."
However, the Cyprus-based weekly news bulletin specialized Middle East Economic Survey MEES estimated gas reserves at al-Derra gas field at 21 billion cubic meters of a daily production ranging between 18 and 45 million cubic meters. This field, however, is located in a sea sector demanded by each of Iran, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia by border demarcation of the sea rift in it.
MEES said in its recent Monday's issue that the Kuwaiti minister of oil addressed a message to his Iranian counterpart Beijan Zanghaneh, asking Iran to put an end excavation work in al- Derra gas field.
