Moroccan immigrants association in Spain calls for pact on immigration
Morocco-Spain, Culture, 5/11/2000

The association of Moroccan immigrant workers in Spain called for the adoption of a pact on immigration, reported the Spanish news agency (EFE).

The association said, in a statement, that the pact should tackle immigration as "a State issue" to put an end to the "political confrontation" over this question and to avert the repetition of El Ejido racist incidents in other regions of Spain.

Moroccans settled in the Andalucian locality of El Ejido, near Almeria, were subject early February to violent acts in retaliation for the murder of a Spanish woman allegedly by a Moroccan.

The statement called political parties, trade unions, parliamentary groups, employers and immigrants' associations to adhere to that pact.

The association considered that only daring political measures can overcome anti-immigrant hostility and hatred.

Anti-immigrant violence which prevail in southern Spain since early February was denounced Tuesday by the European civic forum, a NGO, which criticized the European opinion's silence over the situation of Moroccan immigrants whose human and civil rights are violated.

The organization, which has launched a campaign to raise awareness among the Swiss civil society about the situation of Moroccan immigrants announced that it will not let this situation prevail in this region of South Europe and has pledged to back financially, legally and politically complaints filed by the victims of El Ejido attacks.
