United Nations Security Council delegation heads for Eritrea
Eritrea-Ethiopia, Politics, 5/11/2000

A delegation representing the United Nations Security council on Wednesday left Addis Ababa heading for Asmara in the framework of a shuttle tour aiming at strengthening the resumption of peace negotiations between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

AFP said that the team whose members on Monday evening held lengthy talks in Addis Ababa with the Ethiopian Premier Meles Zenawi will hold talks, once again, with the Eritrea " s President Asyas Afourki, SANA reported.

No official explanation has been so far available on the possibility of the return back of the mission which is headed by the US ambassador to the UN Richard Holebroke to the African horn.

On Wednesday evening the seven ambassador for the UN, members of this mission, held a meeting lasted for two and a half hours with the Ethiopian prime minister after their meeting earlier in Asmara with the President of Eritrea.

Worthy mentioning the border disputes between the two countries which started on May, 1998 resulted in killing tens of thousands of persons and the displacement of more than 600,000 persons.

Both Asmara and Addis Ababa agreed to a peace plan proposed by the African Unity Organization which, in particular states the withdrawal of forces to their positions before the conflict, disarming the border area and the re-deployment of UN forces. However, the negotiations are blocked by technical arrangements for implementing the peace plan, as Ethiopia says that these arrangements do not include returning back to the situation prevailing before May 6, 1998.
