Turabi removes al-Bashir from presidency of National Congress Party
Sudan, Politics, 5/10/2000

The Sudanese Islamic leader Hassan Turabi on Tuesday evening announced that the leadership of the National Congress Party decided to remove Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir and his main aides from the party.

Turabi, whose activities were frozen as a secretary general for the party after he was accused of conspiring against the regime, said the council of the party's leadership, over which he presides and which includes 60 members, had taken a decision to fire al-Bashir because of his "violation of the Party's rules." The council includes Turabi and his two deputies, as well as al-Bashir and his two deputies.

Meanwhile, the commanders of the Lebanese Army announced their backing for al-Bashir and his measures against Turabi.

Turabi did not refer to date of the general trusteeship's meeting or the number of those who attended it.
