A seminar on Syrian- Turkish trade relations
Syria-Turkey, Economics, 5/10/2000

Syrian Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Muhammad al-Imadi on Tuesday in Damascus stated the he hopes that the Syrian- Turkish joint committee currently in session will consolidate fruitful cooperation between the two countries.

In the seminar held on Tuesday on the prospects of trade and economic cooperation relations between Syria and Turkey, al-Imadi also hoped that the meeting will increase the Turkish officials' understanding of "our interests and causes which need their backing."

He said the joint committee meetings are held while Syria is reviewing its trade and economic policies in preparation for wider openness on science and world trade and the economy.

Minister al-Imadi indicated that the decisions and decrees issued recently by President Hafez al-Assad will open new prospects in the process of economic action. He also said new laws and legislation to be issued late will aim at improving the investment and economic climate in Syria.

The Turkish minister of state for economic affairs, Recep Onal, stressed that the participation of more than 150 Turkish companies in the exhibition of products and the existence of a large number of Turkish businessmen in Syria indicate Turkey's sure desire to strengthen economic and trade relations between the two sides. He hoped the visit of the Turkish delegation to Syria will be the start of a new era of fruitful and constructive cooperation that leads to the welfare of both countries.

Meanwhile, the participants in the seminar discussed the economic situation in the two countries and the available investment opportunities.
