Damascus: A decision to release Nizar Nayouf
Syria, Politics, 5/10/2000
Well-informed sources in Damascus told the London-based al-Hayat daily that there is a "release decision" for Syrian journalist Nizar Nayouf together with detainees, and the decision was taken by the end on April.
The Syrian source added that releasing several detainees in the coming days falls in the course of the "tolerance shown by the state to persons who did harm for the state and carried out terrorist acts against it," in previous decades.
Recently the Syria authorities released two leading members of the Syrian Communist Labor Party, Fateh Jamous and Aslaan Abdul Karim, together with their colleague Issam Dimashqi and several other detainees.
The same sources stated that, "The decision taken to release them came in the course of the policy of openness, detente and tolerance with persons who carried out terrorist acts or who were members in organizations that carried out explosions and operations that targeted innocent people, intellectuals, and officials," at the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s.
The sources added that the detention of those people "came according to judicial laws, as happens in any other country when persons carry out operations against the state and its people."
