African health ministers meet in Ouagadougou
Regional-Africa, Health, 5/9/2000
African health ministers Monday entered the second day in their first-ever meeting on HIV/AIDS.
The meeting, which opened Sunday in Ouagadougou, would formulate an elaborate and comprehensive plan of action to fight the AIDS pandemic.
The conference, which brought together some 100 decision-makers, HIV/AIDS specialists, financial partners, and associations of HIV-positive people, would decide on how to better coordinate actions for a more efficient fight against AIDS in African countries.
The participants are expected to share experiences on strategies in prevention and management of patients.
They are also expected to evaluate all actions undertaken in the control of AIDS and to identify strategic approaches to respond to the "real" needs, depending on the abilities of African countries.
The ministers will also define a framework in which the health sector will contribute to the implementation of the international partnership on HIV/AIDS in Africa.
African leaders at the July summit in Togo would submit recommendations from the meeting for approval.
In an opening speech, Burkinabe Prime Minister Kadre Desire Ouedraogo urged the experts to find "appropriate solutions to slow down the expansion of the pandemic."
"This is why AIDS control, far from being a matter for politicians alone, is everybody's business," he pointed out.
