Egypt's role in achieving peace, praised
Egypt-Denmark, Economics, 5/8/2000

Visiting Danish Minister of Development Cooperation Jan Trojborg Sunday praised Egypt's major role in achieving peace and stability in the Middle East and creating ties and liaison channels between Africa and Europe.

At a press conference jointly held yesterday, with Minister of Planning and State Minister for International Cooperation Ahmed El-Darsh following their talks, Trojborg underlined Egypt's importance to Denmark in particular and to Europe in general.

Trojborg invited Darsh to attend the conference that Denmark will hold in Dar es-Salaam, Tanzania, in June and which will be attended by African states receiving Danish aid.

On his part, Darsh hailed the relations of cooperation between Egypt and Denmark in various fields.

"Bilateral economic relations focus on some fields of priority to Egypt namely environment, potable water, sanitary drainage and new renewable energies," he said.

"The talks also dealt with relations of trade and investment between the two countries with the aim of increasing the volume of trade and the flow of Danish investments into Egypt," he said, "The two sides stressed the role of the private sector promotion programme financed by Denmark in coordination between both countries¹ firms," he said.

In reply to a question on El- Za'farana power station to which Denmark contributes, The Danish Minister said that the first stage of this project will be inaugurated before the end of this year.

"It is quite a big project, he said. Denmark has offered Egypt 253 million Kroner grant to fund the first stage of the plant which will generate 30 megawatts per hour," he added.

"Denmark will offer Egypt LE 85 million to contribute to the second stage which will also generate 30 megawatts per hour," added Darsh.

Darsh, answering a question on the volume of the Danish investments in Egypt and trade exchange between the two countries, said that cooperation between the two countries in these fields needed a big push, a matter that Egypt and Denmark seek to achieve.

"Till the end of December, Denmark has been contributing to 16 investment projects operating in the fields of industry, agriculture, tourism and services," he said.

"Investment costs of these projects amount to LE 591 million. The volume of trade between the two countries stood at around LE 284 million," he added.
