Syrian FM receives telephone calls from Albright, Annan

The Foreign minister Farouk al-Shara on Friday received a telephone call from the US secretary General Mrs. Madeleine Albright.

Talks dealt with the latest developments and the consequences of escalating tension in South Lebanon.

Albright condemned attacking civilians and called the two sides to resort self-restrain Al-Shara clarified that the information which has been reviewed with the Lebanese side confirms Israel's responsibility for the escalation of tension on Thursday.

Al-Shara also stressed that Syria is against escalation and denounces military actions against civilians and infrastructure in Lebanon.

Especially at the time when Israel is continuously talking about its intention to withdraw from South Lebanon.] Meantime, al-Shara also on Friday received another telephone call from the UN secretary General Kofi Annan.

During the telephone conversation, the UN chief expressed his appreciation of the joint statement issued on Thursday following the Syrian- Egyptian Saudi meeting in Palmyra.

The UN chief expressed his hope that Syrian officials receive his special delegate Terry Larsen to be briefed on the UN stand concerning the proposed Israeli withdrawal from South Lebanon and the importance of cooperation between Syria and the UN to this effect.

For his part, al-Shara ' stressed that Syria is still honoring the UN charter and is clinging to the UN resolutions. He called on Annan's attention to the fact that Israel's attack against civilians and the infrastructure in Lebanon on Thursday was the main reason for escalation of tension in the region.
