Egypt asks Israel to join non-proliferation treaty
Egypt, Politics, 5/5/2000

Sayed Kasem El-Masri, the advisor of the Egyptian foreign minister, said the revision conference of the non-proliferation treaty in 1995 issued a decision and three resolutions concerning the Middle East, the first of which extended the treaty period indefinitely, the second related to goals and disarmament and non-proliferation principles, while the third enhanced the revision process in an integral transaction that allowed the extension of the treaty indefinitely.

El-Masri said yesterday that among the aims of the current conference is achieving universality of the treaty as an urgent priority, confronting any proliferation and accelerating establishing zones free from nuclear weapons.

He said it also aims at achievements in disarming the nuclear weapons that were topped by ratifying a treaty for a comprehensive ban on nuclear experiments in addition to accelerating disarmament of nuclear weapons.
