Egypt calls for promoting culture of peace
Egypt, Politics, 5/5/2000

Speaker of the People's Assembly Ahmed Fathi Sorour said just and comprehensive peace will not prevail in the area without the restoration of occupied Arab lands, and Israel's withdrawal from the Syrian Golan Heights, South Lebanon and Palestinian territories.

Sorour in a press conference held on the fringe of the Inter-parliamentary Union's 103rd Conference in Amman said there is a continuous coordination between President Hosni Mubarak and Arab leaders on all issues.

"Mubarak sees Israeli-Syrian peace as essential and without it comprehensive peace cannot be achieved," he said.

On the liquidity problem in Egypt, Sorour said that there is no plan for devaluating the Egyptian pound, brushing out reports on that score as rumors.

Meanwhile, Minister of state for the People's Assembly and Shura Council Affairs, Kamal El-Shazli said that making just and lasting peace depends on respecting international legitimacy and the principle of equal rights in a bid to realize the interests of countries.

Shazli added that peace cannot prevail in the Middle East unless it is just, comprehensive and everlasting.

The Minister called on Israel to implement international resolutions related to its withdrawal from all occupied territories and halting settlement building.

He also stressed the importance of rendering the Middle East free from all weapons of mass-destruction.
