An agreement between Garang and a Sudanese organization to release 400 prisoners

The Sudanese human rights group, a non-governmental organization led by prominent Sudanese opposition figure Ghazi Suleiman, has announced that it had reached an agreement with the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) led by John Garang to release 400 prisoners from the government's forces and the irregular people's defense forces.

Suleiman said on Wednesday that the Sudanese government was told about the agreement at the end of March but has not given an official reply on that yet or explained its position.

The spokesman for the southern rebels, Yasser Araman, said in a statement that the SPLA has recently discussed the details to release prisoners with the Sudanese human rights group.

The statement which was released in Khartoum added that a delegation representing the group led by Suleiman will visit the areas controlled by the rebels to meet with the prisoners and to draw up arrangements for their release.

Suleiman added that if the government does not announce its readiness to received the prisoners by the end of this month, "I will by the end of this month take them to another country where they can be received as political refugees."
