Syria has won membership to the human rights committee of the UN Social and Economic Council during the elections held by this council on Wednesday. The majority of 48 countries among the social and economic council's 54 member states voted in favor of Syria's membership. Go

The European Union's Middle East peace process envoy, Miguel Moratinos, will arrive on Monday in Beirut on a two day official visit to Lebanon to hold talks with high-ranking Lebanese officials dealing with Middle East peace process developments and the expected Israeli withdrawal from the Lebanese territories. The Arab League member states will begin carrying out the unified Arab agreement for combating terrorism in January. A statement issued by the general trusteeship of Arab interior ministers said that all the signed states welcomed the start of the executive steps to apply this agreement, which aims at establishing a unified Arab bloc against terrorism. In addition the agreement aims at having the right of initiative in fighting the controlling terrorism in the Arab states. Go

Dennis Ross, the special U.S envoy for the Middle East peace process, expressed his doubts of the possibility that the negotiations from the Palestinian and Israeli sides will reach a formula for a final peace treaty by the specified date, which is less than two weeks away. Go

Casablanca plays host May 9-10 to a Moroccan-Spanish meeting to probe issues of wind-generated energy, reports the Moroccan renewable energy development center (CDER). Delegates of firms and experts from both countries convene at the initiative of CDER and Spanish counterpart IDAE in follow up on the successful Euro-Mediterranean days on renewable energies "MED-Energia 2000" held March 27/28 in Casablanca.
