Explosion of a Sudanese oil pipeline will not effect oil exports
Sudan, Local, 5/4/2000

The pipeline which takes Sudanese crude oil to Beshayer port on the Red Sea was hit by an explosion earlier this week but the exports have not delayed.

The Canadian oil company Talisman Energy Inc., which was strongly criticized by the USA because of its operations in Sudan, stated that the explosion had taken place and that it is the third attack against the pipeline, which extends for 1,610 km, since it began operation in August, 1999.

Meanwhile, Sudanese television quoted the secretary general of the Sudanese ministry of energy and minerals, Hassan al-Toum, saying that the oil transport line was on Tuesday early morning subjected to a limited destruction act.

Al-Toum added that the line was damaged after it was hit in an area, of 30 km from Sankat area, which is 550 KM northeast of Khartoum.

He added that the explosion has not resulted in the eruption of fire in the line and maintenance work has started immediately.

He continued that exportation process was not affected because there are large amounts of oil stored in Behayer port.

The television report added the publications found at the place of the explosion indicated that the explosion was carried out by al-Baja conference, which is part of the opposition National Democratic Alliance coalition.

The Sudanese TV also screened shots of Minister of the Interior Lt. Gen. Abdul Rahim Muhammad Hussein at the site of the explosion, while heavy machinery was repairing the line. Also screened was a pond of leaked oil.
