May Day celebrated in Syria
Syria-Regional, Politics, 5/2/2000

A central rally was held in Damascus on Monday to mark May Day. It was organized by the General Federation of Workers Union (GFWU), under the patronage of President Hafez al-Assad. Acting on behalf of the president the celebration was attended by Prime Minister Muhammad Mustafa Miro and high-ranking officials concerned.

In his speech Miro said, "Syria has the honor to be proud of the fact the changes that have created confusion and disorder in many states were unable to affect the country and to encroach upon its national march of development, steadfastness and progress."

He added that "the policy pursued by President al-Assad since the launching of the Correctionist Movement (the movement by which al-Assad assumed power in Syria) in 1970 was able to establish strong pillars for modern Syria, manifest through the adverse consequences of globalism and Israel's policy of aggression and expansion supported by its main ally, the unilateral master of today's world."

He reiterated Syria's political position saying, "The region's genuine security and lasting stability can be attained only through ending all forms of Israel's occupation and aggression and in establishing a just and comprehensive Middle East peace based on implementing UN Security Council resolutions 242, 338 and 425 and 426 as stated in the Madrid terms of reference and the land-for-peace formula."
