Mauritanian authorities release Ahmad Ould Dadah
Mauritania, Politics, 5/2/2000
The Mauritania's authorities on Saturday released Ahmad Ould Dadah, the secretary general of the Union of Democratic Forces-New Era and one of main Mauritanian opposition figures, after a four-day detention.
Ould Dadah stressed continued work in order to restore "our rights, and we will get into the street and work by all possible and peaceful means to restore back our rights and eliminate repression." He added that democracy has receded and that the authorities are responsible for that.
The Mauritanian authorities had accused Ould Dadah of calling for violence and provoking unrest in the country.
This is the 8th times Ould Dadah has been arrested since he began political work when he took part in the first presidential elections in 1992 against President Maaouya Ould Sid Ahmad Taya.
