Moroccan official meets in Dakar Senegalese premier
Morocco-Senegal, Education, 5/1/2000
Moroccan Secretary of State for Cooperation Aicha Belarbi who took part in the World Education Forum which ended in Dakar on Friday, met there Saturday with Senegalese Premier Moustapha Niasse.
The two officials reviewed bilateral cooperation and means of developing cultural and economic ties between the two African states.
The world education forum, which brought together 1,500 participants, stressed determination for collective action to fight the low schooling rate of children. Currently, 113 millions school age children in the world have no access to primary education while 880 million adults are illiterate, says the Pan-African news agency PANA in a report on the forum.
The participants stressed the need for "expanded partnership" with regional and international institutions and agencies and denounced the fact that young people and adults are denied access to the necessary skills and knowledge to find remunerated jobs or fully participate in the development of their societies.
The forum set out six major objectives to be collectively achieved by 2015. It calls for the improvement of the quality of education in order to achieve recognized and quantifiable learning goals, include reading, writing and arithmetic.
One of major challenges between now and 2015, the participants said, remains the improvement by at least 50 percent of the adult literacy level, particularly among women.
Representatives of governments, NGOs and institutions, groups and associations also pledged to encourage strong political commitments towards education for all.
They urged the civil society to invest more in the development, implementation and follow up of strategies for the development of education.
