Morocco to create radio station for rural women
Morocco, Politics, 5/1/2000

Moroccan Communication Minister Larbi Messari announced that the UNESCO has completed a study on the creation of a radio station for women living in remote rural areas and that when funds will be available a first radio station will be broadcasting for the region of Marrakesh.

During a recent meeting of the family protection association, the minister said similar initiatives will be undertaken in other rural regions of Morocco.

He explained that the project will assess the impact of this mass medium in involving women in local development and the efficiency of awareness campaigns.

Studies conducted in 1995 revealed that the 19.3% of families in the rural world are headed by a woman, compared to 12.3% in cities, he said, recalling that the schooling rate of children aged between 7 and 12 in the families provided for by women stands at 18.8% against 71.3% in families headed by men.

Messari went on that radio and TV are the most popular media among Moroccans.
